Ada Katherine Derrick (Brigman)
January 29, 1937 ~ August 25, 2023 (age 86) 86 Years Old
Katherine Brigman Derrick, 86, of Lancaster, SC, was a beloved child of Lt. Col. George Heyward Brigman of Columbia, SC, and Katherine Gladys Nixon Brigman of Charleston, SC. Katherine passed away peacefully on August 25, 2023, after a long fight of Alzheimer's and a stroke.
Born in Lancaster, SC on January 29, 1937, Katherine was crowned Carolina's Carousel Queen IX in 1955. Katherine’s educational background included attending Columbia College and graduating from Winthrop University with a BA and a MA degree in English. Katherine was a recognized professional artist in South Carolina, and her paintings were valued at 1K a piece.
By profession, she taught school for 18 years with Lexington District 5 at Irmo Middle School. She was named "Teacher of the year" in 1984.
As described by many, Katherine was “movie star”, beautiful, and a determined, and courageous woman. A talented artist, and teacher, she also possessed a kind heart, a confident disposition along with an incredible ability to see the beauty in all things. Above all else, she was a loving mother of Roxann Duva of Huntington Beach, CA, and Caroline Hotmer of Atlanta. Katherine was devoted to her family, her church, and her friends. Katherine was also talented on the piano and organ and she played the organ for St. Paul’s church from 2006-2013. She was also a member of the Order of the Daughter’s of the King.
She is survived by her sisters Rebecca Remsen of Atlanta, and Stella Marie Martin of Florence, and Mardette Brigman of Mississippi, her daughters, Roxann Duva of Huntington Beach, CA, and Caroline Hotmer of Atlanta, her son in law, Roger Hotmer, and grandchildren, Christina Brooke Hotmer, and Brandon Kyle Hotmer. She is loved and is now with her late brother, George Heyward Brigman, Jr in heaven.
Katherine was an Episcopalian, and a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Lancaster, and St. Paul's church in Lexington, SC,
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2023. 1:00 PM visitation, and 2:00 PM memorial service at St Albans 403 Park Road, Lexington, SC. The officiating clergy will be Dr. Reverend Teddy Higgins of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
